Following the success of the Giulietta, Alfa Romeo opened a new factory in Arese, Italy, where the Giulia was one of the most representative models of the new era. It was produced in coupé, saloon and cabriolet versions, with more than one million units in total.

The 1600 Spider version became the brand's new roadster, produced from 1966 to 1993, making it Alfa Romeo's longest-lived model, with some 110,000 units produced.
